Fall in the garden does not have to be a boring time, spent raking and waiting for the snow. Getting out into the garden on crisp sunny days is always fun, and the habit of being active outside will encourage you and your family to venture out even as the temps decline.
When thinking about fall clean-up remember, you don’t have to do everything at once. Check out our Facebook Tips: The Fall Garden, Things to Do Now and Later on chores that can wait for a few weeks, or even until next spring. However, if you aren’t satisfied with your garden’s performance, and what gardener ever is, this is a perfect time to start work on evaluation and planning. While we might dread summer’s end as bringing death to the garden, remember that the cold season gives the gardener time to rest, to research, and to dream—and yes, to figure out what the heck happened in those problems areas.
Be encouraged, sometimes it’s not you, it’s the plants! So, plan for better varieties, ones that are more disease –resistant and productive. Did your plants experience blight or were they plagued with bugs? You have to be a bit of a detective to find out just what went wrong. Make use of the University of Minnesota’s decades of plant research as summarized on the UMN Extension website. This information can help you figure out those garden mysteries—so next year will be even better that this!
